The seven categories of apparel supply chain management software, and what each one owns
The clean way to tell these apart is to ask what the system is the system of record for. Everything else it shows you is a copy.
The table below maps the seven categories a US apparel brand encounters. Revenue stages are the point at which brands typically buy, drawn from observed vendor targeting rather than a published survey — treat them as orientation, not a threshold. Pricing observations are as of August 2026.

Two of those categories have published market definitions worth knowing, because vendors market against them. Gartner Peer Insights treats them as three separate markets: 157 vendors in Supply Chain Planning Solutions, 49 in Product Information Management Solutions — defined as solutions that let teams "create and maintain an approved shareable version of rich product content" — and 41 products in Retail Assortment Management Applications for short life cycle products, which is the merchandise planning category as it applies to fashion. A buyer who searches once and gets vendors from all three has not found competitors. They have found three different products.
The PLM category is by far the largest of the seven, and mostly not because of apparel. CIMdata put the 2025 PLM market at $88.3 billion, a 9.9% increase over 2024, in its 2026 Executive PLM Market Report published on 5 June 2026. That number is dominated by aerospace, automotive and electronics engineering software. Fashion PLM is a small, distinctly shaped corner of it, and the difference matters when you read a generic PLM buying guide.
PLM and ERP: the boundary that causes the most confusion
This is the single distinction worth getting right, because almost every other question follows from it.
PLM owns the description of the product. ERP owns the transactions the product takes part in. Centric Software, one of the larger fashion PLM vendors, describes PLM as managing a product "from initial idea and development to sales and eventual product retirement" and positions it as a "single source of truth." PTC describes FlexPLM as managing "the entire product development lifecycle from design and specifications to sourcing and costing through the supply chain," and states that more than 300,000 people use it, naming Marks & Spencer, VF Corporation, Deckers Brands and Vivienne Westwood among retail customers.
Neither of those descriptions mentions an invoice, and that is the point. The tests below resolve almost every boundary argument.

The costing row is where real implementations go wrong. Both systems hold a cost, they are computed on different bases at different times, and nothing forces them to agree. If your PLM cost sheet is a target and your ERP price is an actual, say so explicitly in both, and decide which one the margin report reads.
What each category costs, where anyone publishes a price
Published pricing thins out fast as you move up-market. The figures below are vendor list prices taken from public pricing pages as of August 2026 and are shown to establish the shape of the market, not as quotes. Enterprise tiers in every category are quote-only.

Two cautions before you build a budget from that table. First, licence is rarely the largest number: enterprise implementations frequently cost more than the first year of subscription, and most of that cost is your team's time rather than the integrator's invoice. Second, watch the metering unit. Per-user pricing punishes you for giving your factories logins, which is exactly the behaviour you want; per-SKU pricing punishes apparel specifically, because one style in six colours and six sizes is 36 SKUs.
What a brand actually runs, by stage
Under enterprise scale, the honest picture is far less tidy than any vendor diagram.
- Under about $3m. Spreadsheets, a tech pack template, shared cloud storage, the commerce platform's own inventory records, and email to the factory. This is normal and it works.
- $3m–$10m. An ERP or an apparel-specific inventory system becomes the first real purchase, because POs, receipts and multi-channel inventory stop fitting in a sheet. Product data stays in files.
- $10m–$30m. Style count, not order count, becomes the constraint. This is where PLM starts paying, and where a sourcing or supplier platform starts paying if the factory base has grown past a handful of mills.
- $30m+. Merchandise planning and demand planning arrive, usually because a wholesale channel or a retail footprint has made open-to-buy a real discipline. PIM appears when the channel count outruns manual listing.
- Enterprise. All seven, plus an integration team whose whole job is keeping them consistent.
The uncomfortable observation: most brands below enterprise scale are running an ERP plus spreadsheets and email, and they are not wrong to. The tooling gap is real but it is not usually the binding constraint.
The failure mode is not missing software — it is that nothing reaches the factory
Here is the structural point this cluster exists to make. Buy every category above and you still have not solved the problem that actually costs money, because all seven systems are inside your company. The factory is outside all of them.
In a typical mid-market setup, one style's truth is distributed across four places:
- The tech pack in PLM or a PDF in shared storage.
- The cost sheet in a spreadsheet, built by merchandising.
- The forecast in a planning tool or a different spreadsheet.
- The purchase order in ERP.
The factory sees exactly one of those, by email, as an attachment, on the day it was sent. Every later revision travels the same way and is only as reliable as the person who remembered to resend it.
A worked example: what one unsynchronised BOM line costs
Take the canonical basic tee: a 180 gsm single jersey crew at $4.30 FOB from India, using 0.27 kg of finished dyed fabric per piece at about $8.15/kg, which is $2.20 of fabric — 51.2% of FOB. Order quantity 10,000 units.
Development raises the body fabric from 180 gsm to 200 gsm after a hand-feel comment on the fit sample. The BOM in PLM is updated. The cost sheet in the merchandising spreadsheet is not.

Three thousand one hundred dollars of margin, on one line of one BOM, on one style. Nobody made a mistake. The BOM was updated correctly in the system that owns BOMs. The cost sheet lived somewhere that does not read that system, and the duty consequence lived in a third place that reads neither. Multiply by a 40-style range and the number stops being a rounding error. Duty rates here are illustrative of method — verify classification and rate against the current HTSUS before relying on them.

How to run an apparel supply chain management software demo without being sold to
Vendors will demo the part that works. Your job is to make the demo run on your own broken workflow rather than their sample data. Six questions, in order:
- Which record does this system own, and which does it display? If the answer is "we integrate with your ERP," ask which system wins when the two disagree.
- Can my factory log in? Not "does it have a supplier portal" — ask what a factory merchandiser sees, whether it costs a licence, and whether suppliers actually use it in comparable accounts.
- Show me a revision. Change a point of measure on a live style and show me every place that change appears, and every place it does not.
- Where does cost live? Target cost, quoted cost, PO price and landed cost are four numbers. Ask which of the four the system computes and which it stores as typed-in text.
- What happens after the PO? Milestone tracking, inspection results and shipping documents are where most PLM demos end and most disappointment starts.
- What does migration involve? Ask for the format of the import template and who fills it in. The answer is almost always "you do," and it is the largest hidden cost of the project.
Bring one real style to the call, ideally a messy one with three sample rounds and a colour change. Ask them to build it live. Any request framed as an apparel supply chain management software demo will otherwise default to a clean sample dataset that has never had a bad lab dip in it.
Where the categories genuinely overlap, and how to decide
Four overlaps cause most of the buying confusion:
- PLM and ERP both hold costing. Decide which is the target and which is the actual, and make the margin report read one of them.
- PLM and sourcing platforms both hold tech packs.
